About Baseball in the Mid-Atlantic-SABRDC

L. Robert "Bob" Davids, of Washington, D.C., is the founder of SABR. For many years, starting in 1951, he contributed free-lance articles to The Sporting News. When The Sporting News discontinued statistical-history types of articles in the mid-1960s, Davids sought another outlet for his avocation and launched a four-page newsletter, "Baseball Briefs." The initial response to the publication spawned the idea of forming an organization of researchers. In 1971, Bob sent letters to approximately 40 "statistorians" around the country asking for expression of interest in forming a research group.

The 16 willing and able to meet in Cooperstown formulated the Society's objectives, its name and acronym. The essential constitutional objectives of SABR are to foster the study of baseball, stimulate interest in baseball and disseminate baseball information.

Bob Davids served in the U.S.Air Force from 1944-46 and was an official with the U.S. Government from 1951 to 1981. He has served as editor of The Baseball Research Journal, This Date in Baseball History, Great Hitting Pitchers, Insider's Baseball and Minor League Stars Volumes I and II.

SABR's highest honor, The Bob Davids Award, is presented each to year to the SABR member whose contributions reflect the ingenuity, integrity, and self-sacrifice of the organization's founder and past president.

		The Bob Davids Chapter of The Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) is the Mid-Atlantic regional group. The Chapter comprises over 500 SABR members in Maryland, Virginia, the District of Columbia, and parts of Pennsylvania and Delaware. Local members of SABR, join forces in keeping with SABR's formal objectives. Currently, the Bob Davids Chapter has an annual meeting in the winter and a ballpark outing each Spring or Summer.
